American Electric Power is a multinational energy company based in Columbus, Ohio, USA.  With the completion in June, 2000 of its merger with Central and South West Corporation, AEP owns and operates more than 38,000 megawatts of generating capacity, making it America's largest generator of electricity.

It owns all or portions of 89 electric generating facilities, with a mix of natural gas-fired, coal-fired, nuclear, and hydroelectric units, along with wind and solar installations, that allow the company to provide low-cost energy to its customers.

AEP is also a leading wholesale energy marketer and trader, ranking first in the U.S. in electricity volume.  AEP provides retail electricity to 7.3 million customers worldwide and has more than US $47 billion in assets, primarily in the U.S., with holdings in Brazil, China, Mexico and the United Kingdom.  In the U.S., AEP currently provides electric service in parts of eleven states.

The company has non-regulated subsidiaries that market and trade energy-related services; provide professional engineering, construction, operation, maintenance and environmental services for energy and industrial projects; and provide energy management and telecommunications services as well.

In addition to climate action projects, AEP has been involved in numerous other environmental stewardship activities, including creation of wildlife and fisheries habitats at some of its power plant facilities; installation of solar panels on schools; conversion of previously mined land into recreational areas; erection of bird nesting structures; taking students and teachers to tropical rainforest sites for study; the Noel Kempff Mercado Climate Action Project in Bolivia, and sponsorship of many environmental education and conservation projects.
