American Electric Power is a multinational
energy company based in Columbus, Ohio, USA.
With the completion in June, 2000 of its merger with
Central and South West Corporation, AEP owns and operates more
than 38,000 megawatts of generating capacity, making it
America's largest generator of electricity.
It owns all or portions of 89 electric generating
facilities, with a mix of natural gas-fired, coal-fired,
nuclear, and hydroelectric units, along with wind and solar
installations, that allow the company to provide low-cost energy
to its customers.
AEP is also a leading wholesale energy
marketer and trader, ranking first in the U.S. in electricity
volume. AEP provides retail electricity to 7.3 million
customers worldwide and has more than US $47 billion in assets,
primarily in the U.S., with holdings in Brazil,
China, Mexico and the United Kingdom.
In the U.S., AEP currently provides electric service in
parts of eleven states.
The company has non-regulated subsidiaries
that market and trade energy-related
services; provide
professional engineering, construction, operation, maintenance
and environmental services for energy and industrial projects;
and provide energy management and telecommunications services as
well.
In addition to climate action projects, AEP
has been involved in numerous other environmental stewardship
activities, including creation of wildlife and fisheries
habitats at some of its power plant facilities; installation of
solar panels on schools; conversion of previously mined land
into recreational areas; erection of bird nesting structures;
taking students and teachers to tropical rainforest sites for
study; the Noel Kempff
Mercado Climate Action Project in Bolivia, and sponsorship of many environmental education and
conservation projects.
